I started teaching in Valleyview, Alberta, Canada – a town of 1800 – in 1978. I quickly realized I had a lot to learn if I wee to be anything more than a mediocre band director. Being the only band teacher in a program that started in grade 6 and eventually included 4 concert bands and 2 jazz bands, I started to steal, er use, other teachers’ ideas and methods. I worked hard to build a quality band program eventually receiving the first Gold Award ever for a concert band at MusicFest Canada, our national festival. There is so much to know and do as a band director it can seem impossible at times, but the most stressful aspect of the job for me was when I had to draft sub plans due to illness or a last minute unexpected absence. That is why I named my site thebandsub.com.
